Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
