Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
